Chapter 27: Carol

Crap, what am I doing here?

As Carol opened her eyes, she was convinced that she had woken up in her old cell at the keep. Except, Ingrid must’ve done some decorating, because the little box of a room had pictures hanging on the walls, and Carol was lying on an actual bed with a headboard and footboard and not on a mattress on the floor.

Fates, she felt so spaced out. She must’ve really overdone it with the alcohol and the pot, and that was why she’d probably landed back in prison. Kian had warned her to watch it.

On second thought, they must’ve put her in a different cell, because there were two doors. Her old cell had only one. The bathroom area had been separated only by a partition. A quick glance confirmed that there was none here.

Which was worse. Because it meant that she was going to spend way more than a few days in the slammer this time.

But what had she done?

Had she’d been telling stories again?

Her memory was fuzzy, and she wasn’t sure what had really happened and what had been a dream. There was a dim memory of being thrown over some guy’s shoulder and carried away.

Boy, had she done more than pot?

It had been a while since she’d snorted, and even longer since she’d injected. Hopefully, she hadn’t fallen off the wagon as the drunkards called it. But if she had, it must’ve been because someone had slipped it to her. She’d been good lately. Or as good as she could be.

Carol reached for the glass of water that someone had thoughtfully left for her on the nightstand and emptied it on a oner. Still thirsty, she looked around, hoping to find a pitcher or a bottle. There wasn’t any in sight. Never mind, she could use the faucet in the bathroom. And anyway, now that she was thinking of water, she felt an urgent need to empty her bladder.

With her head spinning, it was a struggle to get vertical, and as she trudged toward the door leading to what she hoped was a bathroom, Carol was thankful for the small size of the room. Much easier to use the furniture and the walls for support when everything was in arm’s reach.

Surprisingly, she found the bathroom kitted out for a female, with hairbrushes and a hair dryer, and an assortment of lotions and fragrances. There was even a fluffy white robe hanging on a hook, and on the floor below it, a pair of white terry slippers were still in their original packaging.

Nice. She didn’t know they had cells dedicated to females now. Or maybe it was all for her, since she was obviously going to spend a lot of time here.

With a sigh, she took care of business, then stepped into the shower. The water pressure wasn’t as good as she remembered, which was the only downside of this new prison cell compared to her old one.

She spent a lot of time in the shower.
